The NHC has previously discussed what happens with communications during an emergency and the lack of communication services that are available when an emergency occurs. We all know the phone service is not great when we are not in an emergency situation and therefore, we have approached several retail outlets to review the possibility of a local discount for anyone who would like to purchase a 5-watt UHF Handheld radio/s. (5-watt UHF radios would provide a better coverage).
The aim of having access to UHF radio’s is that when the phones are out, we as a community will still be able to communicate from property to property. To assist with this, we will also look at having a dedicated channel for the residents of the area at times of emergencies.
Following the discussions with the retail outlets, James at JB Hi fi Hobart has indicated they would be more happy to provide the community a discount on purchasing 5-watt UHF Handheld radio/s, however, James has requested that we provide them a rough guide of how many purchases would be likely to be made and what sort of purchases prior to notifying the amount of discount that will be applied.
Therefore, I am reaching to see if anyone would like to make a purchase of a 5-watt UHF Handheld radio/s and what type of setup you would be interested in i.e 1 unit of dual pack.
Currently they have several options –
- Uniden single radios range from $179 to $349 or a dual pack with case which includes mic/speaker and car accessories $569.00
- Oricom single radio range from $200 -$249 with speaker mic and full dual pack as referenced above $559, Oricom are only available online
- GME Single radio $279, single with some speaker and car lighter charger $349, and full dual pack as referenced above $639
